Initially formed as a franchise business of Unicar Leeds back in 1991 the business was set up by Jeff Lunn, with the help and backing from Colin and Sylvia Trickett, the Directors of Unicar Leeds, and has been helping motorists stay safe and sound in Leeds, Wakefield and throughout Yorkshire ever since.
Jeff had already spent the previous 17 years working in the business, having started out in sales in 1976 with Autosound Services in Leeds, with then a stint working at Unicar before returning to Autosound, firstly to manage the branch in York, and then back as manager at the branch in Leeds.
The Unicar Wakefield franchise was set up first with a view to potentially rolling out a program of further franchised businesses across the North of England. In 1995 Jeff then purchased the Unicar branch in Hull, turning this into another franchised operation, and the two branches continued growing and trading successfully up until 1998 when a joint decision between Jeff and Unicar was made not to pursue the franchise model any further, and a totally new independent business “Ram Mobile Electronics” was born.
The name derived from a previous idea dating back to the 80's when Jeff and two work colleagues, David Burnell and Ronan Sharpe worked for "Autosound" and looked at setting up their own Car Audio business under the "Rhythm and Moves" name, a word play on "Rhythm and Blues" Due to a change in circumstances that business venture didn’t materialise and they all continued to work for Autosound up until 1991 when Jeff left to start his own business.
Sadly Ronan was later killed in a car accident, and it was when reminiscing this story that the name for the new business was decided and Rhythm and Moves was simply shortened to R.A.M to reflect a more modern style, and a logo of an alloy wheel with horns was produced.
The business has now been streamlined and operates solely from the Wakefield branch, reflecting the current trend for more mobile fitting, although they still have two large workshops, which are usually booked up 5 days in advance such is their reputation, and offer the benefit derived from customers being able to visit their premises to view the products in their two showrooms and have their vehicle worked on under cover in a safe and secure workshop.
When Jeff first started working for the In Car Radio Industry as it was known, cars didn’t come with a radio, and there was no such thing as FM or a compact disc let alone an iPod or DAB the internet hadn't been invented and a mobile communications was something that you might have heard about whilst watching Tomorrows World, how things have changed!
“Mobile Electronics” still perfectly sums up what they offer the motorist of today, and whilst many people still ask "what does R.A.M stand for" and the meaning is not relevant today, we still think "Rhythm and Moves" is a great name.
